Many people that are injured while working don’t report it unless it’s a major incident. What you may not know is that some seemingly small accidents can have major repercussions and long-lasting effects. There are many good reasons why you should notify a supervisor of any injury.
Medical Care
If the injury is obviously serious, such as a blow to the head or profuse bleeding, reporting the accident will ensure prompt medical treatment. The seriousness of other types of injuries may not immediately be apparent, such as strains, sprains, or falls. What seems to be a minor cut or laceration can easily transition into an infection that’s difficult to treat, life-threatening sepsis, or even an amputation.
Accident Investigation
When you report the injury, it will require an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident that can provide important insights into safety issues. Be sure that the accident report is taken in writing and that you get a copy of it at that time.
Failure to report an accident can result in denial of medical treatment and Workers Compensation benefits should the injury result in lost income and employment. Don’t count on your private insurance to cover any treatment costs of a work-related accident.
Know Your Workplace
Co-workers can be valuable witnesses if you suffer an injury. If you work for a company or managers that have a reputation for denying coverage, it’s critical that you report the accident and obtain a copy of the report. Be prepared for co-workers that may not want to risk their job by providing information in your favor. It’s illegal for companies to retaliate in that way, but the fear is still there.
Contact an attorney that specializes in workplace accidents as soon as possible while the incident is still fresh in your mind. It’s critical if you suspect a safety violation led to the injury. It’s also a good idea to contact an attorney if the injury is obviously serious as the effects of some injuries can linger for some time.
